Things to do Before Leaving

-Arrange transportation to/from airport.

-Arrange for pet care / plant care / house care.

-Give tour contact numbers to family/friends (this will be emailed to you a few weeks before leaving).

-Inform neighbors/landlord about dates away.

-Inform colleagues/students/clients of dates away, and alternatives if they need your services.

-Put together an address list for postcards to send.

-Pay bills, check which bills may arrive while you are gone.

-Get cash A good way to bring cash is $100 bills. Make sure they are the up-to-date ones with the large picture in the center. No marks or rips. Do not exchange money to Egyptian Pounds while in your home country.

-Check with your bank/credit card company about their policies for withdrawing money with your card while in Egypt. ATM withdrawals are usually cheaper than cash advances.

  • What is your limit per day on withdrawals while in a foreign country?
  • What are the charges?
  • What are your options?

-Tell your credit card company that you will be in Egypt. Credit card companies like to know that charges may be showing up on your account from a foreign country and that this is OK (those charges are not typical of your spending profile, so are suspect).
NOTE that the toll free numbers DO NOT WORK while you are in Egypt.

-Stop/hold mail. Fill out form at P.O.

-Change outgoing message on voicemail.

-Clear out refrigerator.

-Go over packing list – spare glasses? Medications?

-Check that cell phone has charged battery. Bring charger or something to recharge it.

-If you intend to check your email while in Egypt, go over the procedure for checking your emails from a computer which is not your own. If your password is stored on your computer, remind yourself what it is.

-Make sure you are bringing telephone numbers for airlines, Ruth’s Egyptian cell/mobile number* and other important phone numbers. Put in the same place as your ticket and passport.

*If you are delayed, please call Ruth’s Egyptian cell/mobile:

+20 100 618 0963 -- from USA: 011 20 100 618 0963
 or
in the USA leave a message at

-Turn the thermostat down.

-Water plants.

-Garbage out.

-Make sure appliances are turned off, faucets off securely.

-Unplug computers, printers, etc.

-Windows & doors closed & locked, lights off/on.

-Bless the house. Bless the trip. Bless your return home – safe, enriched & happy.

Bon voyage!
