TRAVEL GUIDES:
**Egypt by Robert Morkot. WW. Norton & Co. ISBN
962-217-654-2. Handy size, filled with information about the
ancient sites, as well as life in modern Egypt. Lots of good diagrams
and terrific pictures.
Eyewitness Travel Guides: EGYPT.
DK Publishing. www.dk.com. ISBN 0-7894-9718-2.
Loaded with descriptive pictures and diagrams. "The guides that
show you what others only tell you."
The Traveler’s Key to Ancient Egypt
by John Anthony West. Quest Books. ISBN 0-8356-0724-0. This book
is just loaded with information. Gives ideas about what could be the
symbolic meanings of the architecture. In a light, readable, but
erudite, style.
Egypt Handbook
by Kathy Hansen. Moon Publications, Inc. A very nicely organized book.
Lots of good diagrams and comparison carts (ex’s: the different types
of columns and capitols, a kings list with cartouches, hieroglyphic sign
list). Written in an easy-to-read, concise manner. Lots of subheadings
in bold make it easy to find information.
EGYPT, Cadogan Guides.
Author: Michael Haag. Includes quotes from earlier writers and
historical references that can be interesting. Traditional
interpretations. Quite detailed. Some good diagrams and charts.
EGYPT, Lonely Planet.
Authors: Humphreys, Jenkins, Logan, Cole and Simonis. A lot of good
practical information. Nicely arranged with good maps, although the
prices given are often very much outdated.
NOTE: I would not bother buying the Fodor’s
Guide, as it has very little information about the sights
themselves. Their emphasis is on describing the different hotels and restaurants. |
